This means that elastic ligatures are no longer needed to hold arch wires (which actually move the teeth) in place. For the patient, the benefit is less plaque accumulation around the brackets and easier cleaning overall. More important, the arch wire does not exert unwanted forces in order to move your teeth. That usually means that you have less discomfort with each wire change and a healthier cushion that holds your teeth in place.
In addition, a more efficient tooth movement system, like the Damon system, can space out your need for office visits to 8-10 weeks.
