Why Are Bands Put on Certain Teeth While Wearing Braces?
Posted on 9/5/2022 by Evan
Metal braces alone cannot fix biting problems. As much as metal braces work well for correcting misaligned teeth, they need extra help when it comes to correcting bites. This help comes in the form of inter-arch rubber bands. These bands are put on certain teeth when wearing braces to make them more stable and correct bite problems.
The Purpose of Bands
Bands are mostly used alongside metal braces to correct malocclusions such as underbites, overbites, open bites, and crossbites. These bands play the role by spanning across the bottom and top arches. It is important to note that this is not as simple as taking any band and tying it on the braces. Instead, there are unique bands that are used to get the desired results.
There are different types of bands used to correct specific teeth problems. Depending on the malocclusion problem you have, we will use the necessary type of band to fix the problem. The most common type of band is the class II band. This band is commonly used to treat overbites. To use them, one end of the band is placed on the upper canine, with the other end placed on your lower molar. This forms a tension that holds the upper jaw back towards the rest of your mouth. As a result, there will be a reduced overbite.
Another common type of band is the class III band. This one is used to treat underbites. To use it, one end of the band is placed on the upper first molar while the other is placed on the lower canine. These bands are basically arranged in the opposite direction of class II rubber bands. The arrangement works by pulling the lower jaw back to correct underbites. With them, you will be able to open your mouth wider. Contact our offices for more information on how braces work.
