Can Children Get Braces Before Becoming Teenagers?

Posted on 9/19/2022 by Evan
Can Children Get Braces Before Becoming Teenagers?Braces are helpful dental appliances that help straighten misaligned teeth. These devices can be placed either behind your teeth (lingual braces) or in front. They are highly effective in correcting teeth defects that could affect your smile. Braces are mainly used by adults whose teeth might have shifted due to age or other reasons. There are also some cases where braces are used on children. Children can get braces before they become teenagers, as long as they have a few adult teeth.

Wearing Braces for Children

Children as early as seven years can wear braces and any other type of dental appliance. This is possible because it has little impact on their confidence, health, and social interaction with other children. However, it is important to note that children without any adult teeth will have problems wearing braces. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you wait until they have grown some permanent teeth before considering these appliances.

Waiting is important because the changes should be permanent, not just temporary. For that reason, many parents opt to wait till their kids turn nine or ten before getting braces. Furthermore, waiting is helpful because the child will be in a better position to take care of their teeth and braces when older. When the child hasn't grown permanent teeth, getting braces can be disadvantageous because their mouth will change as they age. This might force the child to continue wearing braces throughout their teenage years to maintain the changes.

Nonetheless, it is possible for children to get braces as long as they have a few adult teeth. When they get braces, it is important to keep an eye on them and ensure they are practicing good oral hygiene. Remind them to floss regularly and brush at least twice a day to get rid of bacteria. Contact our offices for more information about braces wearing among children.
