When it comes to jaw pain, it is important to find out the root cause of that pain. If the discomfort is due to tension, you may need to break a habit to ease your jaw pain. If your food is not small enough when you try to eat it, or is too sticky or chewy, changing your diet could help. If the pain is related to clenching and grinding or jaw issues, braces might help.
Braces and Jaw Pain
Many people are aware of the benefits of braces. Their primary design is to correct teeth spacing issues and align your teeth. However, it is not uncommon for patients to finish their course of treatment with braces and find they have less jaw pain. This may be because the patient has some degree TMD.
Jaw Pain and TMD
TMD, or temporomandibular disorders, relates to issues concerning your jaw and the muscles in your face which control your jaw. Someone with TMD may have temporary or chronic pain on one or both sides of their face.
Braces are a common treatment for TMD. If the cause of TMD is issue with your bite, you can see how braces are an effective treatment. Simply straightening your teeth, which may align your jaws can help alleviate TMD pain. As we align your teeth it will make the most effective use of your teeth, which will cause you to use your jaw muscles less and reduce the pain in your jaw. Your joints are less fatigued, and you feel better.
