Little girl trying to flossFlossing is an essential part of maintaining good oral hygiene. It helps remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach. But flossing can be tricky, and many people don't do it correctly. That's why we're here to help!

Why Flossing is Important

Flossing helps prevent cavities and gum disease. Cavities are caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth. Plaque can also irritate your gums, leading to gum disease. If left untreated, gum disease can damage your gums and bones, and even lead to tooth loss.

Flossing can also help keep your breath fresh. Food particles and bacteria can get stuck between your teeth, causing bad breath. Flossing helps remove these particles and bacteria, keeping your breath smelling fresh.

How to Floss Properly

Here are some tips on how to floss properly:

•  Use about 18 inches of floss. Wrap the ends around your middle fingers, leaving about 1 inch of floss between your thumbs and index fingers.
•  Gently slide the floss between your teeth, using a sawing motion.
•  Once the floss is between your teeth, curve it into a C-shape against one tooth.
•  Gently slide the floss up and down along the side of the tooth, making sure to go below the gum line.
•  Repeat the process on the other side of the tooth.
•  Use a clean section of floss for each tooth.
•  Be sure to floss at least once a day, preferably before bed.

Flossing Tips for Beginners

If you're new to flossing, it can take some time to get used to it. Here are some tips for beginners:

•  Start by flossing just once a day.
•  Use a gentle touch. Don't force the floss between your teeth.
•  If you find it difficult to floss with your fingers, you can use a floss holder.
•  If your gums bleed when you floss, don't worry. This is normal, especially if you haven't been flossing regularly. The bleeding should stop after a few days of flossing.
•  If you have any questions about flossing, please ask us at your next appointment.
