Early Signs Your Child May Need Braces

Beautiful Black teenager smiling with brcaes from Greeley Orthodontics in Kennett Square, PADoes your child have crooked teeth or other orthodontic issues? Many times, orthodontic problems become noticeable around age 7 or 8. These are some of the early signs that your child may need braces.

Crowded Teeth

Braces may be needed if the teeth are crowded or overlapping. There is not enough room in the jaw for all the permanent teeth, so they come in crooked and pushed together. Braces create more space in the mouth so teeth can be straightened.

Overbite or Underbite

An overbite occurs when the upper teeth excessively overlap the lower teeth. An underbite is the reverse, with lower teeth extending too far upward. These issues can affect chewing and lead to jaw joint problems. Braces are the typical treatment.

Crossbite

A crossbite means the upper and lower teeth do not line up correctly. Either one or more upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth, or vice versa. Crossbites should be corrected because they strain teeth and bone, which can cause problems over time.

Open Bite

With an open bite, there is a space between the upper and lower front teeth when the jaw is closed. The top and bottom front teeth fail to make contact during biting. This can interfere with proper chewing and speech. Orthodontic treatment with braces is often needed to close an open bite.

Protruding Teeth

If upper or lower front teeth stick out beyond their normal alignment, this indicates protruding teeth. These teeth are at high risk for fracture and may impede speech. Braces reposition protruding teeth for better function and appearance.

Spacing Between Teeth

If there are gaps between some of the teeth, orthodontic treatment may be recommended. Braces close unwanted spaces by shifting teeth into proper alignment. However, some minor spacing is normal.
