How Do I Know if My Child Requires Orthodontic Treatment?

Early or Delayed Shedding of Baby Teeth

Baby teeth usually start appearing between 6 months and 3 years old. They then begin to naturally fall out around age six. When the child reaches 12 to 13 years old, all baby teeth should have fallen out, giving room for permanent adult teeth. If your child loses baby teeth too early or they do not fall out naturally, it may signal oral development issues. In such cases, orthodontic treatment, like braces, might be needed.

Biting or Chewing Problems

If your child struggles with chewing or biting, it might indicate a need for orthodontic treatment. Signs include food lingering in the mouth or falling out. Your child may also experience a slow and inefficient eating process.

Improper Bite and Misaligned Jaw

Jaw and bite problems in your child may require orthodontic treatment. Irregularities like overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite can affect teeth alignment. If you notice such issues, consulting our orthodontists for an assessment is recommended.

Crowded Teeth

If their teeth are spaced irregularly, overlap, or are misaligned, orthodontic correction can help. Crowded teeth may occur due to a narrow palate; treatment options could include a palate expander or braces.

Thumb-Sucking

Thumb-sucking, often viewed as harmless, can have drawbacks over time. Prolonged thumb-sucking may gradually push the teeth outward. This usually causes improper jaw alignment and eating challenges.

Speech Complications

Did you know misaligned teeth can affect airflow and the ability to pronounce words while speaking? Once you notice these signs, we recommend consulting a dental professional to diagnose and address the problem. We work with speech pathologists to ensure effective treatment and satisfactory results.
