Retainers After Braces: Everything You Need to Know

Posted on 11/15/2023 by Andrew Admin
Young girl with braces smiling at Greeley Orthodontics in Kennett Square, PA.You have just completed your braces treatment and now you have perfectly straight teeth, and you cannot wait to take the braces off. However, did you know your teeth are at risk of moving back to their original position after taking out your braces? To prevent this from happening, your dentist will recommend retainers. This means that you will have to go through another treatment process which can last for several months. Even though this may seem like a big inconvenience, it is necessary to ensure long-lasting results.

Types Of Retainers

Your dentist will recommend two major types of retainers, which are fixed and removable retainers. The dentist can recommend either of them. However, sometimes the dentist may recommend combining both. We also refer to fixed retainers as permanent retainers since dentists place them on your teeth for some time. This means that you cannot take them out yourself. However, with removable retainers, you can take them in and out of the mouth by yourself.

Advantages Of Retainers

The most popular benefit of retainers is that they help maintain straight teeth since they prevent teeth from shifting after braces. However, most people do not know that retainers have many other benefits. They help to improve speech impediment issues and breathing problems.

How Long Do I Have to Wear Retainers?

How long you will wear your retainers is different for everyone. Some people wear retainers for 4 or 6 months, while other people wear retainers for up to 12 months. Thus, all you have to do is to follow your dentist's instructions to ensure a fast treatment process. Some dentists may recommend wearing your retainers during the day or at night. While others may recommend wearing your retainers full time that is during the day and night.

It is also important to take care of your retainers to ensure that they do not get damaged. The best way to do this is to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth and flossing. You also have to keep up with your dental appointments. However, if you have removable retainers, remember to take them out when eating. You also have to keep your retainers clean by using a retainer cleaner and rinsing with warm water.
