Does Orthodontic Treatment Hurt?

Posted on 9/11/2023 by Evan
Does Orthodontic Treatment Hurt?A significant concern that many people have about orthodontic treatment is whether the treatment is painful. Having metal wires and brackets in your mouth may seem painful, but the good news is that orthodontic treatment has come a long way in comfort. In this post, we will explore some aspects of orthodontic treatment and answer the question: Does it hurt?

What is Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment involves braces or aligners to correct misaligned teeth and jaw irregularities. It aims to improve the function and appearance of the teeth and bite. These braces have brackets bonded to the teeth, connected by archwires, and they gradually shift the teeth into their desired positions. Clear aligners are removable trays exerting gentle pressure to move the teeth.

Initial Discomfort

Orthodontic treatment is not painful. However, in the initial stages, you may experience discomfort or soreness when you get your braces or start aligner therapy. The discomfort often results from the pressure the braces and aligners exert on your teeth. However, the discomfort dissipates when your mouth adjusts to the new appliances. It takes only a few days for your mouth to adapt to the orthodontic treatment you have.

How can you Manage the Discomfort?

The good news is that you can manage this discomfort. The most effective way to manage the discomfort is by taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Another way to relieve discomfort is by applying a warm compress or rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater.

Also, you can apply wax or orthodontic silicone to your braces or aligners to create a protective barrier between the appliances and the mouth's soft tissues. Applying this wax or orthodontic silicone will help prevent irritation and sore spots. Consult your orthodontist for guidance on using these materials effectively. Ultimately, orthodontic treatment is not painful and offers the best results for misaligned teeth.
