How Can I Take Care Of My Braces?Congratulations on your new braces! Now that you are on your way to having a gorgeous smile, you may need some information about how to care for them. Here's your go-to guide for braces care.

Caring For Your Braces

First, take a good look at your braces. Nearly all types of braces have brackets that attach to the teeth, and wires connect the brackets together. Dentists tighten braces over time so that teeth move gradually into the correct position. Because you have brackets and wires, you need to be careful of food and activities while wearing braces.

There are certain foods you need to avoid when you wear braces. For example, if you love apples and celery, you will need to cut the pieces into bite-sized chunks because they can break your wires or brackets. You need to be careful with other food items, such as steak, corn on the cob, and nuts. Avoid popcorn because the kernels can also break brackets or wires.

You also need to avoid overly chewy or sticky food, such as caramel, gum, fruit chews, and toffees or taffy. These foods aren't hard, but they can pull your brackets or wires off your teeth.

You will need to keep your braces clean. To do that, take a toothbrush and flossers (get the ones made for braces) to work or school so you can clean your teeth after each meal. The better you care for your teeth while you are wearing braces, the better your teeth will look once the braces come off.

If you play sports, you need to wear a mouthguard. You'll want to wear a mouthguard for practices and games, so you can avoid your braces becoming damaged. If you have questions about caring for your braces, make an appointment with a dental provider to make sure you have all the information you need.
