How Can I Address A Braces Emergency?

Posted on 1/9/2023 by Evan
How Can I Address A Braces Emergency?True braces emergencies are rare, but when they happen, they can be scary. Braces wearers can resolve most of the problems at home, saving time and getting immediate relief. If you are unaware if a braces problem is an emergency or not, it is crucial to contact a dentist or an orthodontist.

Common Braces Problems

Broken braces and wires are common issues with braces. If you experience breakage of braces wires to a level where they poke parts of your mouth like the gums, tongue, and teeth, you should seek the help of an orthodontist. As you wait for the appointment, try to use a pencil, especially an eraser end to help reposition the wire such that it gets away from sensitive areas or tissues of the mouth. Orthodontic wax can also be applied to cover the wire.

A loose bracket or band is another common. If you notice this, call an orthodontist immediately. In the interim time, use a piece of dental wax in reattaching the loose bracket. If it's the case of a detached band or bracket, you may want to save the part to be reattached to the tooth by the dentist.

True Orthodontic Emergencies

You should contact an orthodontist immediately when you notice that the face or mouth is swelling because it could indicate infection. Severe pain or injury and trauma are also emergencies. An orthodontist can help establish if these issues are happening because of wearing braces.

Make sure to properly follow the instructions an orthodontist offers during your treatment. If you are taking part in sports, it is imperative you wear protective gear such as a sports mouthguard. This way, you ensure the mouth, teeth, as well as braces, remain protected.

Talk to us about braces problems whenever they arise. Make sure you make trips to a dentist for the scheduled checkups. Also, visit our orthodontist as we have asked you so that we can check the restorations.
